Gigi Del Neri says he quit Roma earlier this season because he was just the wrong ‘type’ of Coach for the capital outfit.
The former Chievo miracle worker was appointed by the Giallorossi in September, but resigned 50 days ago after struggling to come to terms with the unique Olimpico atmosphere.
"You need a different type of tactician in Rome," he said. "That is not my kind of football.
"I wanted to talk about the sport and not politics. I just wasn’t respected. I went away from the experience convinced that I did my very best."
Del Neri became the club’s third Coach of the season after the previous resignations of Cesare Prandelli and Rudi Voller.
However, it’s an encounter that he insists has taught him a valuable lesson for the future.
"I must never take charge of a team once the season has already started ever again," he continued.
"I didn’t do a bad job and I didn’t quit because of the results or the 3-0 loss to Cagliari.
"My ‘marriage’ to Roma was simply wrong. I demanded enthusiasm but the environment asked for something else."
Roma decided to replace Del Neri with Bruno Conti until the end of the season, in order to given them enough time to consider who will be their Coach for the 2005-06 season.
Lecce’s Zdenek Zeman and Serse Cosmi of Genoa have been linked but Claudio Ranieri is keen for the job.
"I’ve not been contacted by anyone at Roma but I would like to dismiss claims that there isn’t a good feeling between myself and President Franco Sensi," said the former Chelsea and Valencia boss. "After all, I’ve never met the man.
"I’m not putting myself up for the job but I would be happy to one day take charge of Roma. If that doesn’t happen then I’ll continue to support them from a distance."
