Roma's Cassano out of Italy squad

ROME, Feb 6 (Reuters) - AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano has withdrawn from Italy's 22-man squad for a friendly against Russia in Cagliari on Wednesday just hours after being recalled to the side.

The 22-year-old, who earlier played for the full 90 minutes of Roma's 1-1 draw with Bologna, withdrew from the squad with a knee injury a few hours after receiving his first call-up from national coach Marcello Lippi for the match.

The 22-year-old, who has a reputation for being difficult to manage, had failed to add to his previous six caps for the Azzurri since Lippi replaced Giovanni Trapattoni as coach shortly after Euro 2004.

Lippi said earlier this week that Cassano could provide the "stroke of genius" to spearhead Italy's challenge at next year's World Cup in Germany.

Inter Milan striker Christian Vieiri was recalled to the squad after he continued his recent good form by scoring his 100th Serie A goal in Inter's 2-2 draw with Parma on Sunday.

Italy lead European Group Five on nine points, two ahead of Norway, while Russia are third in Group Three on seven points, six behind leaders Portugal, in their bids to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

New Spurs signing Mido has hit out at his previous club Roma after joining Spurs on an 18 month loan deal. The striker appears to be having a good time at White Hart Lane scoring twice in his debut for the club. But it has not made him forget about his time in the Italian capital.

Speaking on his own website the player stated:

"The last period was tough and was like a bottle-neck in my career."

"Some people in Roma tried to destroy me and didn't give me the chance to prove myself with the team.”

AS Roma defender Cristian Chivu has played down speculation linking him with a move to Inter Milan.

Chivu told Controcampo: "I'm not thinking about Inter at all.

"All that I am interested in at the moment is returning to being a player for Roma.

"I admit that anything is possible in this game but I see no reason why I should go and play my football in another team."

Roma’s Daniele De Rossi and Amantino Mancini are summer transfer targets for Real Madrid.

Reports in Spain insist that the Giallorossi stars are on Arrigo Sacchi’s wish-list, after Real’s technical director watched the game against Bologna on Sunday.

De Rossi (pictured) is understood to be the Madrid club’s principal objective given his rise in the game over the last couple of seasons.

The youth team product, still just 21-years-old, is now a midfield regular for both club and country.

Sacchi knows all about De Rossi but Real officials were also impressed with his performance in the Champions’ League clash between the two clubs in September.

Speculation today also suggests that Mancini could follow him to La Liga, as Football Italia initially reported on Wednesday.

The Brazilian is rated by Sacchi as one of the best wide players in European football right now.

It is understood that Real could tempt the capital outfit to sell Mancini but it would take a mega-offer for Roma to sacrifice rising star De Rossi.

Real have also been associated with three more Roma players over the last year in the shape of Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Cristian Chivu.

The two clubs also completed transfer business last summer when Walter Samuel left the Olimpico in a £15m deal.

Roma’s Amantino Mancini has committed himself to the club after reports linked him with a move to Real Madrid.

"I have great admiration for Sacchi and Luxembourgo, who was my first Coach with the Brazilian national side," he told the Corriere dello Sport.

"Real are a great club and it is obviously very pleasing that I am being associated with them, an honour as I know what it means to play at the Bernabeu.

"However, I still see my future at Roma. I recently signed a new five-year contract and the club have faith in me."

Roma captain Francesco Totti insists he wants to stay at the Stadio Olimpico and guide the club to success.

"My wish is to stay with Roma," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "I want to continue alongside these teammates to prepare for next season and hopefully be in a position to win some silverware."

He continued: "Considering the problems that plagued the start of our season, our objective now is to qualify for the Champions’ League and compete for the Coppa Italia."

Totti also went on to speak about two major influences in his career.

"I had two coaches who made a real difference to my career," he added. "Carlo Mazzone gave me my Serie A debut and taught me so much about being a man. Zdenek Zeman was a mentor for my understanding of this sport."

A disappointed Luigi Delneri blamed bad luck as the main cause for Roma's 2-0 defeat against Inter at San Siro on Saturday night.

The Giallorossi missed a good chance of decreasing the gap that seperates both sides in the standings and now find themselves seven points behind the Nerazzurri in the race for a Champions League spot.

For Delneri luck was an important component in Inter's win but in the end the Giallorossi accept the result of the pitch.

"We suffered two goals from setpieces when Inter shot on goal just three times. These are difficult matches, it happens. We were unlucky not to take advantage of the chances we had.

"We lost but we showed that we can still improve a lot. We accept this defat with a heavy heart because the result could have been different. However we go forward on our road and we praise the winners. Still, the first free kick shouldn't have been given."

Totti wants Roma answers

Francesco Totti will demand talks with President Franco Sensi before making any decision on his future at Roma.

The Italian international wants to remain with his home-town club but only if he receives satisfactory answers to his questions.

"My priority is to stay at Roma," he stated via his Corriere dello Sport newspaper column. "When the right time comes, I will speak to the club about their plans.

"I have great faith in the Sensi family and I want a direct rapport with them," he continued, seeing as his contract expires in 2006.

"I will hopefully receive information regarding the technical project in place, the directors and the players.

"When I say the players, I’m specifically talking about the competitiveness of the side which must not be lost."

Totti has previously stated that he only intends to continue wearing the Giallorossi shirt if the club can fight for major honours.

"I think we can start winning again if the more important players are kept here, a few youngsters come through the ranks and with the signing of a couple of top quality individuals," he added.

"It is my objective to reach some more important achievements with Roma but it is important that this club has a credible structure."

Roma are still trying to resolve a few financial problems that led to the sales of Emerson and Walter Samuel in the summer.

Meanwhile, former Roma boss Fabio Capello was again asked to comment on Totti given their continuing war of words since the tactician joined Juventus.

"He is a great player and a generous man," stated the Coach. "He sometimes talks too much though…"

Italy internationals Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Serie A's leading goalscorer Vincenzo Montella have yet to agree on contract extensions with the Giallorossi club.

The trio's contracts run out in June 2006 but with negotiations on hold, the fans' concerns are growing.

"I want to make it clear that the club's intention is to keep these players," said club administrator Rosella Sensi.

"We will do everything possible because they are three men that we know well but obviously the willingness has to be reciprocal."

Totti and Cassano have been linked to Real Madrid and AC Milan while Montella should have no shortage of offers after scoring 18 league goals in 22 appearances.

Sensi said the club's failure to clinch a Champions League spot next season would not affect the contract negotiations.

Speculation in the Italian capital suggested that all three would leave in June if the team failed to qualify for Europe's elite competition.

"The contract extensions of Totti, Cassano and Montella are not linked to the club's eventual qualification for the Champions League," said Sensi.

"It's true that this is our objective but whether or not we clinch fourth position in the standings will not determine the extension of these important contracts."

Roma are currently seventh in Serie A, five points behind fourth-placed Udinese.

Vincenzo Montella’s season has been excellent so far as the Serie A top scorer was also rewarded with a call-up for the Italian national team. Now the Roma striker has stated that his intentions are that of remaining with the capital city club till the end of his career.

“With the club I have always had an excellent relationship. As soon as we’ll sit around a table we shall find an agreement just after a few seconds. My will is that of continuing with Roma.”

Montella also found time to take a dig at his former team mates (Emerson and Zebina) and coach (Capello).

“I have a terrible memory; I don’t remember who plays for the Bianconeri.”
